COMPREHENSIVE PLAN FOR HIV/AIDS

Introduction:

Ilala Municipal Council is among the three municipalities established in the year 2000 from the former Dar es Salaam city council
in Dar es Salaam region with other two municipalities of Kinondoni and Temeke.It covers an area of 210 km2 with population of 637,573,
male 321,903 and female 315,670 as per 2002 National population and housing provisional census results.

The Dar es Salaam region community, like of that other regions in the country has been affected by the HIV/AIDS, which in the Ilala Municipality
HIV/AIDS ranks among the top five killer diseases, others being Malaria, TB, Diarrhoeal diseases and Acute Respiratory Infections.

Both Government and Private health facilities provide services in the Municipality towards HIV/AIDS control.

There are 8 hospitals – 1 government and 7 private; 14-health centers – 2 government and 12 private; 114 dispensaries – 15 government and 99 private.

HIV/AIDS is not only a biomedical problem; it is also social, economic and cultural, which calls for inter-sectoral rather than single departmental interventions.

In view of the above, Ilala Municipality adopted a multi-sectoral approach in its mitigation measures.

CURRENT SITUATION OF HIV/AIDS IN THE MUNICIPALITY

The prevalence of HIV/AIDS is still a problem in the Municipality. The rate of infection is estimated at 10% of population and there are about 780 known cases

Major means of virus transmission:
